BJ Smith is a multi-instrumentalist, song writer & producer probably most well known for his work as Smith & Mudd.
After establishing the now legendary Goldswong Terrace, Nottingham, as a home for some key collaborations in the late 90s, BJ Smith returned to London and set up the 3 piece band Movedrill with long time friend and drummer Matt Klose (Crazy P) and Richard James (the Matthew Jay band) on bass.
After many years trawling the live circuit and recording in countless studios (metropolis, matrix, square centre….) he got his own studio and bedded down to begin churning out a long list of works ranging from short film composition to commercial releases for boutique labels, with a little foray into stop motion animation thrown in for good measure.
Hailed as \“King of the collab\” (Shout4Music), BJ Smith can be heard on an array of projects that have and are creating a stir: co-writing a debut White Elephant LP with Hot Toddy and Ron Basejam (Crazy P); adding instrumentation to Huw Costin\‘s Torn Sail debut LP; co-writing and epic triple pack BISON LP with Holger Czukay (Can).
The release of his movedrill projects LP on NuNorthern Soul in June 2012 saw the start of a fruitful relationship that has brought about the Dedications to the Greats series, which kicked off to critical acclaim with his covers of Umi Says (Mos Def) and Runnin’ (The Pharcyde) in January 2013
